400 Year Old Message of Hope
January 3, 2024
To be honest, I don’t consider myself a big history buff. But when I go back and study how great figures in history lived their lives I’m usually deeply moved and inspired. 400 years ago, a man named Samuel Rutherford was a Scottish pastor. I found a great quote from him about hope.
He said, “Our hope is not hung upon such an untwisted thread as, ‘I imagine so,’ or ‘It is likely’…Our salvation is fastened with God’s own hand, and with Christ’s own strength, to the strong stake of God’s unchangeable nature.”
Rutherford found his hope solely in who God is…not in what he may or may not do in the future. And he lived it out… constantly giving away God’s love and the hope of salvation.
It was said that Rutherford was constantly praying, preaching, visiting the sick, always writing and studying. His tombstone ended with the words, “Acquainted with Immanuel’s song.”
May his legacy inspires ours, as well.
Remember, choose hope today.
