G. K. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox." Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible, Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out."
When he wrote about hope he said, “Hope means hoping when things are hopeless, or it is no virtue at all... As long as matters are really hopeful, hope is mere flattery or platitude; it is only when everything is hopeless that hope begins to be a strength.”
This means that when you’re feeling hopeless, that’s when true hope can be born. Because if you only have hope when things are going great, that’s not really hope at all. Kind of like how the Bible talks about love. What value does your love have if you only love those who love you? It’s truly love when you love someone who doesn’t love you.
Remember, choose hope today.
